Aluminum Potassium Sulfate (Alum)
Alum (aluminum
sulfate) is used in water treatment. The addition of alum to raw
water causes small particles and colloids to stick together and form
heavier particles (floc) which will settle to the bottom. This process is
called
coagulation or
flocculation.
Alum is great for treating
pools with poor water conditions and Alum can lower phosphate levels. If you can't see the bottom of the
pool - alum may be the trick. Removes suspended algae, dirt, debris
etc. and settles it to the bottom. (follow directions on bottle)
After this process you
vacuum to waste the settled gel -atinous material - out of the pool.
Use
1-2 lb per 5000 Gallons, depending on how bad the pool water looks.
Alum works well with equal amounts of shock chlorine to bring back a
swampy pool. First remove debris (leaves, twigs, tires, etc) and
lower pH to 7.0. Add shock and alum until water turns blue-gray
color, then brush and shut off filter overnight. The next day, the
pool should be clear, then slowly vacuum to waste the floc.
